Short Reads is a free email-based literary magazine showcasing flash nonfiction. Each featured work is contained entirely in the body of an email and also available online. Accompanied by an original illustration, it’s an invitation to take a little break without opening yet another tab in your browser. Founded in March 2023, Short Reads showcases a mix of original essays and previously published pieces that appeared only in print or in now-defunct publications, or that our team is excited to bring to a new audience of readers. Our four-person volunteer staff has a combined 45-plus years of experience working in literary publishing. We hope the work the magazine features will encourage readers to see part of the world through fresh eyes and come back changed. We believe in the power of true stories to share ideas and experiences, foster empathy, and help make sense of what can happen in a life. We have learned that the email format of the magazine helps heighten the immediacy and impact of these stories.
