Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
The Enthusiast is a publisher of mostly handmade books and zines focused on affordable and unique bindings that draw on a punk and camp aesthetic (with some machine-made editions, which are distributable nationwide). We leave the specifics of our hydra-headed opposition to the stultifying conformity of the ideological state open to our authors—not wanting to impose our vision on your work. Instead, we stand as a statement of alterity in what has been called "extreme conservatism" in the history of the book, and we see ourselves as a populist venture vested in an anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist agenda. In short, we are open to experimental work and risk-taking. We aim at the cultivation of art outside the stranglehold of an increasingly isolated, ludicrous, but hopelessly self-satisfied cultural elite; but we are open to work that does not take such a lofty aim. Our books are collaborations between the writer and press in terms of design, and while we work primarily in prose, in the past we have worked with poets, photographers and visual artists.
