Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
The Madison Journal of Literary Criticism (MJLC) is an international, abolitionist publication from undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The MJLC believes that literary criticism is never isolated to an academic setting or format; it consists of asking questions, dreaming big, engaging in conversations, producing art, and thinking critically in all environments. To better showcase the vast potential and diverse formats of literary criticism, the MJLC has become more than just a publication: it is also a community that works to create. We have transitioned from being just a collection to a collective—one that engages in contemporary literary debates in the form of open forums, discussions on weekly readings, and written reflections. Through our lessons, readings, and discussions in weekly "study groups," we use literature to create a foundational understanding of ecological abolition, the carceral state, and systemic harm. This foundation then influences how we curate an anthology of submitted works for a bi-yearly publication, which relates to a broader abolitionist theme (previous themes include Consciousness, Renaissance, Resistance, Dream, Revolution, Care, and Endurance). The MJLC's executive board works alongside the study group to read and review submissions from categories like poetry, prose, fiction, nonfiction, academic essays, and art. Each edition is composed of submitted works, staff-written features, and collaborative spreads with regional community organizations.
