GENRE GUIDELINES: Poetry We will consider most forms of poetry including free-verse, haikus, odes, and sonnets. We only ask that the poems convey a coherent message and are of a high literary standard. When it comes to poetry, we love to feel things, so make us laugh, make us cry, and make us think. While we are not a genre-specific magazine, we do prefer certain themes. We love poetry that tackles real, raw, and hard-hitting topics. We accept up to five poetry submissions (in one file) per person. Fiction We’re looking for exceptional short fiction that is thought-provoking, engaging, and of a high literary standard. While we are not a genre-specific magazine, we do prefer certain themes: we love pieces that cover real, raw, and hard-hitting topics. If your piece doesn’t quite fit those parameters, don’t worry—they’re really just guidelines. Please keep your submission between 1,000 and 3,000 words. We also accept flash fiction (up to 1,000 words) that follow the same guidelines above. We only accept one short fiction submission per person. FORMATTING GUIDELINES: Name your submission file with your first and last name (ex. FirstNameLastName.docx). Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Garamond. Poetry applicants only: if you are submitting more than one poem, please include all pieces in a single Word document with each poem on a separate page of the document. Include a cover letter within your submission document that includes the titles of your poems. This helps us to sort through your submissions more quickly and efficiently. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Using the forms below, please submit your work in an unprotected Word document. All submissions must be previously unpublished in print or online. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please let us know if a piece is published elsewhere by contacting us here. Please do not send submissions to this address; they will be ignored. Before submitting, we suggest that you read previous issues of The Raven Review in order to familiarize yourself with what we're looking for.
