THE UNDER REVIEW IS AN ONLINE LITERARY JOURNAL COMMITTED TO PUBLISHING LITERARY FICTION, POETRY, AND CREATIVE NON-FICTION WITH A SPORT SLANT, NOD, BACKDROP, OR UNDERCURRENT. The whistle blows and play is suspended. The action breaks. The clock stops. The explanation you’ve heard a thousand times; “the previous play is Under Review.” Something that was certain a moment ago is now in question. Did she make it? Did he catch it? Was their toe on the line? Were they in bounds? Did they get it right? Are we good or are we screwed? Even when a review takes a moment to complete, it tends to take a lifetime. It’s a moment of reflection and reconsideration, of fear and faith. It’s a moment to evaluate the smallest detail and hope for the best result. A single moment holding infinite emotions, it’s only natural we name our sports literary journal after such a moment. the Under Review strives to publish work that brings these moments to life. We welcome diversity in voice and content. We encourage new perspectives on old pastimes. We support rookies. We honor legends. Send us your lobs, your curve balls, and your Hail Marys; we are wide open.

Submissions Policy
the Under Review publishes twice a year (Winter and Spring) Submissions are open year-round. the Under Review considers original, previously unpublished fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry with a sports edge, glance, or focus. (This also excludes work published on any website, including author’s own site, from being submitted for consideration.) Fiction and creative nonfiction submissions must be limited to 5,000 words. Novel and memoir excerpts are acceptable as long as they stand on their own. Short and flash forms are welcome in both CNF and fiction and up to three pieces in these forms, with the total number of words for all pieces combined not exceeding 8,000 is acceptable. Poetry submissions must be limited to three poems or fewer. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but the writer must withdraw the manuscript immediately if it has been accepted elsewhere Entrants may submit only one submission per genre/category. It is preferred that entrants submit in only one genre per issue (creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry). However, if submitting in more than one genre/category please communicate this in the cover letter to avoid clerical confusion.
