Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Union Spring is a literary review of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The editors founded this journal in Spring 204 to publish poetry and fiction they believe in, to give voice to the voiceless, and maybe make a little bit of a difference. As a matter of precision, Union Spring searches for the kind of words that come up from the street and speak from the heart. We’re keenly attenuated to the literary language of the mid-century beats and the dirty realism of the American masters. It’s an opinion only, but there’s a literature of protest inherent in pointing the finger, and we hope to echo the great American longing for something courageous, powerful, and new. But really, when you know you’ve got something, you know it in your bones. We feel that way about Union Spring and hope it means as much to you, too. Universally speaking, we won’t pretend to know what’s best – only what we think can help make a difference. That’s perhaps the best aim we have for this publication, and the best summary as well for what you might submit. We are committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and hope to help underrepresented voices of all types (cis- and trans- women, gender non-conforming, agender, non-binary, genderqueer, people with disabilities, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+).
