Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Waxen is a quarterly, cooperative effort. We specialize in experimental, weird, surreal, and literary horror and publish short stories, poetry, and art from a diverse set of authors and artists. All contributors are fairly compensated and retain the rights to their work. From the binding to the designs painted on the dust jacket, volumes of Waxen are assembled exclusively by hand. Our physical releases blend literature and art, both in content and presentation, and are released in first-edition batches of 100 hand-numbered, unique copies every three months. (Second editions lacking the hand-painted elements are always available.) Evoking the serialized/genre-focused tales of pulp periodicals, the D.I.Y./anything-goes aesthetics of zine culture, and the excitement and dread of a child leafing through Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in a musty school library, each issue of Waxen is a celebration of a form and a medium we feel is waning in the digital age.
