The Washington Writers’ Publishing House’s seeks full-length manuscripts in poetry, literary fiction (short stories or novels), and literary nonfiction (memoir or essays or hybrid format) from writers who are residents of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. These prestigious regional literary prizes are judged blind by past winners. Each winning author receives $1,500, 25 author copies, and all publication costs. Established in 1975, the Washington Writers’ Publishing House is a 501c3 nonprofit cooperative (all volunteer) literary press. Special note: the press requests that each winning author commit to two years of service to the press–this is usually in the form of manuscript review/judging. Submissions are via Submittable with a $28.00 fee. Please read the guidelines on our website closely for specifics on page length/word count in each category and read our recent winners including For The Blessings of Jupiter and Venus, a novel Varun Gauri, which was highlighted by National Public Radio as a ‘Book We Love,” and Transplant: A Memoir by Bernardine Watson, noted by Poets & Writers as one of their ‘5 over 50’ debuts, and more…available everywhere books are sold.
