New York, NY (August 7, 2024)—The Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) has announced that it will award $350,000 in capacity-building grants to 46 nonprofit literary magazines and presses across the United States. Recipients will receive grants of $5,000 or $10,000 to support projects that build organizational capacity and ensure greater sustainability.
The Capacity-Building Grant Program is made possible with funding from Hawthornden Foundation, originally founded in 1983 by the late Drue Heinz.
“We are delighted to support CLMP in its essential capacity-building program for literary magazines and presses,” said Ellyn Toscano, Executive Director of Hawthornden Foundation. “The contributions of CLMP to the literary arts are incalculable. Their work enables the ongoing success of so many other literary nonprofits.”
Through its Capacity-Building Grant Program, CLMP will support grantees’ projects in areas such as fundraising, finance, marketing, publicity, distribution, and website development; skill-building opportunities for staff or board members; diversity and equity initiatives; leadership development and management training; strategic planning; and succession planning.
“We’re honored to continue the important work of providing literary magazines and independent presses with capacity-building support, thanks to Hawthornden Foundation,” said CLMP Executive Director Mary Gannon. “These publishers are essential to a vital and vibrant publishing ecosystem, and to the lives of writers and readers nationwide.”
Grants were recommended by an independent grantmaking panel composed of Amanda Bullock, Senior Artistic Director at Literary Arts in Portland, Oregon; Diana Marie Delgado, former Executive Director of Hugo House in Seattle, Washington; and Sue Landers, former Executive Director of Lambda Literary in New York City. Final grant decisions were made by CLMP and approved by a committee of the Board of Directors.
