Launched in November of 1999 as an independent, nonprofit literary press, Tupelo Press released its first 5 books of poetry in 2001 and has gone on to publish and distribute 240 additional titles in the ensuing years, so many of them winners of national and international prizes. We annually send 14-16 new books into the world each year, including poetry, important translations and anthologies, creative nonfiction, and some fiction. Through the years, we have privileged emerging writers, and especially women and writers of color, although our list has also grown to include many of our most important established writers as well. We are the only independent literary press to self-distribute through a team of independent sales reps, covering booksellers and wholesale houses throughout all 50 States, and have devoted ourselves rigorously to creating audiences through reading tours, special events, and through extensive educational outreach, including seminars, retreats, and residencies.
