Alternative Field's chapbooks and zines are published through our lab, Alternative Field Notes, and they feature emerging talent, grade-school students, well-published poets and writers, and bedroom poets. Many of our chapbooks are curated and designed around La Palabra reading series, a monthly poetry reading in the neighborhood of Highland Park, which is one of the longest-held open mic poetry readings in Los Ángeles, featuring both emerging and well known local and national poets, with an emphasis on poets of color. Some chapbooks are curated and designed to respond to the specific issues that plague our communities of working class people of color. They are often accompaniments to visual art exhibits that are curated around those issues, and sometimes they are stand-alone chapbooks.
Alternative Field is concerned about the sustainability of our neighborhood and its culture, the chapbooks we publish ,and the public readings that follow, serve as an exciting way to highlight the cultural expressions and artistic treasures of our community, as told through the actual voices of the community. To have these expressions documented creates an opportunity to foster intergenerational exchange for years to come. Each chapbook is archived online and maintained as collections in our multilingual community library, for future educational and participatory use.
